Step Away from the Dark

* Step Away from the Dark *

"And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness." (Genesis 1:3-4)

The initial aspect of God’s newly created world was one of darkness in the presence all throughout the waters.

Since God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all." (1 John 1:5)

The darkness had to be specially created-

"I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things." (Isaiah 45:7)

Before God could then call for the light to appear in the darkness.

This would later serve as a striking picture of the entrance of light into the darkness of a soul born in sin.

"For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ." (2 Corinthians 4:6)

The light enters our soul by His Word.

"The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple." (Psalm 119:130)

This great theme, contrasting the darkness of the soul without Christ to the glorious light He brings when that soul receives Him by faith, is found often in Scripture.

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." (1 Peter 2:9)

"Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining." (1 John 2:8)

Jesus even called Himself that true light which divided the light from the darkness.

"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”" (John 8:12)

And because we have received the true light, we should also live in the light of His truth.

"For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light" (Ephesians 5:8)

"The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light." (Romans 13:12)

God’s light is good. In the Holy City-

"There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever." (Revelation 22:5)
